Evolution Control Committee
Plagiarhythm Nation Vol. 2.0
(Seeland)

Clevelandian Mark Gunderson follows in the mold of Negativland, whose Seeland Records have nobly put out this collection of dance beats, lounge sounds and plundered vocals. The best of the nearly 30 tracks here (most from the previous Plagiarhythm Nation which was only available at ECC shows) combine recognizable riffs (Public Enemy, AC/DC) with lifted and twisted vocal tracks from self-help records, sermons, news broadcasts and the like. Some of the tracks run a little goofy, but the ones that work - like Dan Rather edited to recite a litany of horrors on the track "Rocked by Rape" - more than make up for the lesser attempts.

It was this track that won Gunderson a cease-and-desist from CBS. Seeland has valiantly re released cds of questionable legality, most notably putting out two discs of John Oswald's Plunderphonics in an oversize box with a thick book of notes and collage. EEC might sound a little much like Negativland (who themselves made headlines when they were sued for sampling and altering the cover art from a U2 single), but Gunderson's humor and righteous sense of appropriation shine through on this subversively enjoyable disc.
