N.O. Moore / John Edwards / Eddie Prevost: Darkened, yet shone (Matchless)

A set of four improvised pieces by two old masters, percussionist Prvost and bassist Edwards, and a relative newcomer (I believe a member of Prvost's workshop), guitarist N. O. Moore.

In many ways, the set is similar to most of Prvost's recordings from recent years outside of AMM it's always interesting how different the two sensibilities are. Here, we have a free improvised session, but one in which all three members are active almost all the time, listening to each other surely, but not so much cognizant of the room they're in or the general sound/tenor of the space. So there's a good amount of virtuosic playing in effect. Without a doubt, Prvost and Edwards are virtuosos of the highest order, though one has the suspicion that they can reel off music like this without half trying. Moore plays electric guitar, evinces some grounding in rock-like attacks and effects, generating biting, stinging sonorities that recall Blood Ulmer leavened with John Russell. (He also pens a fairly trenchant essay on some improvisatory notions which is included in the release). The dynamic level remains fairly consistent throughout medium loud save for parts of the final track where some hesitancy and breaks, both welcome, appear. For fans of the active, motion-filled area of free improvisation, this is a fine enough release and gives one the opportunity to hear Moore, whose development might be interesting to track.
