"Rafael Toral, born in Lisbon, 1967 has been intrigued by the potential of sound and the functions of music since he was a teenager. As a composer and performer, he has been deeply involved with Rock, Ambient, Contemporary, Electronic and Free Jazz music in different periods of his life.

Working with electric guitar and electronics, in the 1990's he created a blend of Ambient and Rock and recorded acclaimed albums like Wave Field or Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance. By the early 2000's he arrived to a sense of accomplishment about his previous 15 years of work, also realizing the world needed a different creative response. He decided to start something new, as radically different from the previous phase as possible. In a transition to vulnerable action, he launched the alien-sounding Space Program in 2004, using experimental electronic instruments. It's been an ambitious long-term project exploring an approach to electronic music based on silence, through decision making and physical gesture, in a way inspired by post-free Jazz. The resulting music, "melodic without notes, rhythmic with no beat, familiar but strange, meticulous but radically free - riddled with paradox but full of clarity and space", has been described as "a brand of electronic music far more visceral and emotive than that of his cerebral peers".

In the last 15 years he's been thinking and practicing an understanding of silence as "space", with a clear function in music creation but also as a metaphor for social relationships and a statement on information and sensory overload.

Performing solo or in numerous collaborations (including Jim O'Rourke, Jim Baker, Sei Miguel, Chris Corsano, John Edwards, Evan Parker, Tatsuya Nakatani, Manuel Mota, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock, Christian Marclay, Sonic Youth, Rhys Chatham, Lee Ranaldo, C Spencer Yeh, and many others), he has been touring throughout Europe, Canada, USA, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

Also active in visual and spatial arts, Toral has produced video and several installations from 1994 to 2003.

In 2014 he relocated to the mountains in central Portugal for a more sustainable life. In 2017, having concluded the Space Program's recording series, Toral is entering a wider field with multiple directions and possibilities. From his mountain studio, he also offers mastering services."

"Bhob Rainey is an award-winning composer / performer, saxophonist, and sound designer. He holds a Masters in Music Composition from New England Conservatory ('97), where he studied with iconoclastic microtonalist Joe Maneri, jazz legends Paul Bley and Ran Blake, and the mathematically gifted composer Pozzi Escot.

In 1998, with trumpeter Greg Kelley, Rainey founded the duo Nmperign, which was highly influential in an emerging phase of non-idiomatic improvisation often referred to as "lowercase" or "EAI" (Electroacoustic Improvisation). In 2000 he founded The BSC, an improvising large ensemble, in which he developed techniques for an improvisational discipline that were eventually outlined in his 2011 publication, Manual. Throughout the late 1990's and early 2000's he performed globally and collaborated with numerous improvisers across generations, including Axel Dörner, Andrea Neumann, Günter Müller, Michel Doneda, Lê Quan Ninh, and many others.

By the mid-2000's, while continuing to work in the realm of improvisation, Rainey began to produce electronic and algorithmic works. He spent five years collaborating with German composer Ralf Wehowsky (RLW) on the 2007 release, I don't think I can see you tonight, which, along with Nmperign and Jason Lescalleet's Love Me Two Times (2006), established him as a formidable electronic composer who synthesizes streams of Musique Concréte, computer music, and improvisation.

Throughout his career, Rainey has sought out cross-discipline collaborations, working especially with theater makers and choreographers. Since 2012 he has worked with theater company New Paradise Labs, composing for The Adults, which premiered at the 2014 Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and O Monsters (2016). He created the soundtrack to Leah Ross's 2013 film, Levitate, which premiered that year at the Rooftop Film Festival in New York City, and he performed live in Jungwoong Kim's and Marion Ramirez's site-specific dance work, Capsized, at the National Asian American Theater Festival in Philadelphia in 2014.

Rainey was awarded the Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2013, and in 2014 he received a Subito grant from the American Composers Forum to complete a multimedia project with filmmaker Catherine Pancake. He is currently working with New Paradise Laboratories on a musically-driven follow up to O Monsters, with Jungwoong Kim on a multimedia dance installation, and with Leif Elggren and CM Von Hausswolff on the inauguration of the "Kingdom of Elgaland-Vargaland Embassy" in Philadelphia.

To date, Rainey has over 30 releases as a leader or co-leader."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Hifiklub is a French instrumental ensemble open to collaboration and experimentation. Since 2007, the band has been building a protean work that evolves through encounters. Hyperpeactive, the quartet from Toulon has a wide catalog, constantly changing, unveiling the fertile artistic friendships that the group has been able to establish and perpetuate for ten years to explore the field of possibilities of music, image and of text."-Revolvy

"With "E Lisboa", French experimental rock quartet Hifiklub goes to the last consequences in the application of their collaborative program. They once again develop a project in the "home" of their own guests, something they did before, for instance, with Lee Ranaldo for the creation of "In Doubt, Shaddow Him!", a movie about Ranaldo himself, but now they give a big step further, so rare that it comes as an absolute novelty: they also manage to show an incredible understandment of a whole musical scene, mobilizing people coming from several genres, styles and tendencies (from pop and rock to experimental music and free improvisation) of a country living now a very particular explosion of creativity: Portugal.

It isn't the first time Anthony Belguise, Jean-Loup Faurat, Regis Laugier and Nico Morcillo show an interest in the Portuguese musicianship, as their previous partnerships with The Legendary Tigerman (blues-rock singer and guitarist Paulo Furtado, who is again a contributor) and the rock-fado-country-jazz band Dead Combo testify, but now they have some of the most distinctive personalities of this very special activity with them, like Carlos "Zingaro", Joana Gama, Rafael Toral, Ana Deus, Lula Pena, Rita Braga, Von Calhau (Marta Angela and Joao Artur), Bernardo Devlin, Yaw Tembe and Maria Radich, to name just a few.

Never before such different artists had the opportunity to do something in the middle-ground. Four pairs of ears from other geographic origin were necessary to find connections and ensemble them, resulting in this mind-blowing work which we can expect will change everything in the most Western territory of the European continent."-Shhpuma
