Schlothauer, Burkhard : Harmonies And Structures (Edition Wandelweiser Records)

"Hilary Jeffery is a self-proclaimed 'desert trombonist' and composer, born in Surbiton, England in 1971. A central and sustaining influence on his music is a sense of 'silent space', which he first experienced in the Sahara Desert in the 1990s. Hilary aims to share this experience, creating inner-spaces for listeners and fellow musicians to explore via the medium of his ensemble Lysn. He studied at Dartington College of Arts, University of York, European Dance Development Centre Arnhem, Netherlands Royal Conservatory, and has worked for more than twenty years as a musician playing in many different styles and areas of music including rock, techno, electronica, jazz, pop, afrobeat, contemporary classical and free improvisation. Groups he has played with between 1994 and 2016 include: zeitkratzer, CC Hennix and The Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage, Zinc & Copper, Tonaliens, The Barton Workshop, Mir8, Jimi Tenor Big Band, Paul Dunmall Octet, Sand and Germ. Hilary's principal teacher and mentor for trombone playing is James Fulkerson, with whom he studied between 1998 and 2000. In 2013 he started a study of Dhrupad with Amelia Cuni, aiming to apply techniques of this Indian classical music tradition to the trombone. He has received composition commissions for Slagwerk Den Haag, GRM Acousmonium, David Kweksilber Big Band, Apa Ini and Lysn. He has been invited for artistic residences such as at Recollets in Paris (2012), won composition prizes such as the Henriette Bosmans Prize (Netherlands, 2009) and appears in many different recordings on various labels including Aquarellist, Col Legno, FMR, Dilemma, Important Records, Mikroton, New World Records, Soul Jazz, Sloow Tapes, Sub Rosa, Zeitkratzer Records and Karl Records."

"Jürg Frey was born in 1953 in Aarau, Switzerland. Following his musical education at the Concervatoire de Musique de Genève, he turned to a career as a clarinetist, but his activities as composer soon came to the foreground. Frey developed his own language as a composer and sound artist with the creation of wide, quiet sound spaces. His work is marked by an elementary non-extravagence of sound, a sensibilty for the qualities of the material, and precision of compositional approach. His compositions sometimes bypass instrumentation and duration altogether and touch on aspects of sound art. He has worked with compositional series, as well as with language and text. Some of these activities appear in small editions or as artist's books as individual items and small editions (Edition Howeg, Zurich; weiss kunstbewegung, Berlin; complice, Berlin). His music and recordings are published by Edition Wandelweiser. Frey has been invited to workshops as visiting composer and for composer portraits at the Universität der Künste Berlin, the Universität Dortmund and several times at Northwestern University and CalArts. Some of the other places his work has developed are the concerts at the Kunstraum Düsseldorf, the Wandelweiser-in-Residence-Veranstaltungen in Vienna, the Ny music concerts in Boras (Sweden), the cooperation with Cologne pianist John McAlpine, the Bozzini Quartet (Montréal), QO-2 (Bruxelles), Die Maulwerker, incidental music, as well as the regular stays in Berlin (where during the last years many of his compositions were premiered). Frey is a member of the Wandelweiser Komponisten Ensemble which has presented concerts for more than 15 years in Europe, North America and Japan. Frey also organizes the concert series moments musicaux aarau as a forum for contemporary music."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"is nine a plagiarism?

the well-known zagreb music biennale, which has been a hotspot for contemporary music for more than 30 years, asked reinhold friedl, musical director of zeitkratzer, to perform a program of late ensemble works by john cage in 2010. unfortunately, however, there are only a few works that could be performed with the full cast of zeitkratzer.

so i suggested that i would rewrite the non-existent number piece nine for zeitkratzer.

in my master thesis, i had thoroughly studied john cage's number pieces, their compositional style - in particular seven, one of the first works in this series - and had already recorded and produced this composition in 2002 (EWR 0604).

the number pieces, of which there are about 50, were all composed by using of chance operations, applied to certain predefined possibilities available for selection. the compositional process therefore consists to a large extent of determining the sound material and the questions to be asked. the actual transformation into the notes can then be done relatively mechanically.

by analyzing the scores of the number pieces, it is possible to deduce the questions answered by the chance operations. from that, the material and its possibilities in terms of pitches, dynamic range of values, articulation variants etc. can be determined fairly reliably. once one has these specifications it becomes theoretically possible to reapply the chance procedures to a new piece, that could have equally occurred to cage.

the idea for nine was born: cage's composition plan should be adopted and i, personally submitting to his taste, accepted his authorship. as his posthumous assistant, i implemented his plan and wrote nine.

i realized his program all the way down to the layout of the sheet music and only brought in my own formal element of symmetrically arranged tones of equal duration with regard to the electric guitar part.

stepping back behind cage and merging with him in my work, was a cheerful process that gave me a lot of pleasure. and since i worked according to his plan, I feel nine to be cage's work in essential aspects.

yo tampoco lo entiendo has been constructed for the dance piece "bewegte bauhausbilder" at theater gera 2019.

structures indépendantes - octet was commissioned 2007 for the klangzeit-festival time is on my side in münster. delicately spotted tones of two identical instruments (flutes, violas) in symmetrical intervals meet two different sound surfaces - on the one hand unisons with more or less beatings (violas, flutes) of about 5 seconds each and on the other hand 3 minute long sound blocks of clarinet and harmonium. the distribution of the action spaces of the duos is independent of each other: while the meeting of the tones is organized completely geometrically, we experience it as somehow coincidental. in addition, there are blocks of time in which the tympani sometimes glissandize very slowly and thus irritate the sound surfaces above in a subtle way. the stone harp contributes very beautiful, clearly microtonally defined tones."-burkhard schlothauer, 2019
