Artist Biographies:

"A seemingly endless -- and endlessly eclectic -- series of releases made the innovative guitarist Eugene Chadbourne one of the underground community's most well-known and well-regarded eccentrics. Born January 4, 1954 in Mount Vernon, NY, Chadbourne was raised in Boulder, CO, by his mother, a refugee of the Nazi death camps. At the age of 11, the Beatles inspired him to learn guitar; later exposure to Jimi Hendrix prompted him to begin experimenting with distortion pedals and fuzzboxes. Ultimately, however, he became dissatisfied with the conventions of rock and pop, and traded in his electric guitar for an acoustic one, on which he began to learn to play bottleneck blues.

Perhaps Chadbourne's most significant formative discovery was jazz; initially drawn to John Coltrane and Roland Kirk, he later became an acolyte of the avant excursions of Derek Bailey and Anthony Braxton. Despite the huge influence music exerted over his life, however, Chadbourne first studied to become a journalist, but his career was derailed when he fled to Canada rather than fight in Vietnam; only President Jimmy Carter's declaration of amnesty for conscientious objectors allowed the vociferously left-wing Chadbourne to return to the U.S. in 1976, at which time he plunged headlong into the New York downtown music scene. After releasing his 1976 debut, Solo Acoustic Guitar, he began collaborating on purely improvisational music with the visionary saxophonist John Zorn and the acclaimed guitarist Henry Kaiser.

Quickly, Chadbourne carved out a singular style, comprised of equal parts protest music, free improvisation, and avant-garde jazz, topped off with his absurd, squeaky vocals. A complete list of Chadbourne's countless subsequent collaborations and genre workouts is far too lengthy and detailed to exhaustively document, although in the early '80s he garnered some of his first significant attention as the frontman of Shockabilly, a demented rockabilly revisionist outfit which also featured the well-known producer Kramer. Following the group's breakup, Chadbourne turned to his own idiosyncratic brand of country and folk, accurately dubbed LSD C&W on a 1987 release, the same year he joined the members of Camper Van Beethoven for a one-off covers project. In addition, he recorded with artists ranging from Fred Frith and Elliott Sharp to Evan Johns and Jimmy Carl Black, the original drummer in the Mothers of Invention; in between, he continued exploring unique styles inspired by music from the four corners of the globe, all the while issuing a seemingly innumerable string of records, most of them on his own Parachute label."

"Peter Nye Kerlin: Kerlin is a bassist/composer from Brooklyn involved in rock, jazz-like, and experimental music. Kerlin is the principal bassist for several critically acclaimed groups: Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band, Sunwatchers. Peter's solo efforts include Peter Kerlin Octet. John Schaffer of WNYC's New Sounds called the octet's album, Salamander(Innova, 2013), "an ambitious debut". Kerlin's soundtrack work includes the films The Rooms(2012) and Burn Country(2016)

Kerlin has also created scores and video with dance artists: Anna Sperber, Miguel Gutierrez, Andrew Dinwiddie, Diana Crum. Kerlin taught art and technology related courses at NYU, City College of New York, and Friend's Seminary."

"From the farney drumlins of Monaghan, multi-instrumentalist Jim McHugh brings a new edge to the folk tradition blending traditional and indie styles with up-tempo beats. In 2016 he drew upon his past and recent musical experiences to record an album of new songs entitled 'Noise Machine'; 'indie folk driven rock that has a vibrant beating heart, Pete Whalley'."

Jeff Tobias: "I am a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and writer who has been an active part of the American DIY community since 2003.

My main creative activity these days is contributing via alto saxophone and synthesizer to the punk/psych/jazz group Sunwatchers. We've released a torrent of music since 2014 on beloved record labels including Trouble in Mind, Castle Face, and Amish. I also play bass guitar in the "rock instrument music" ensemble Thee Reps. I have performed and recorded with artists including Modern Nature, Katie Eastburn, David First, Arthur Doyle, Mega Bog, Eugene Chadbourne, Matana Roberts, and many others. To date, I have contributed to over seventy physically released recordings, and I tour regularly throughout North America and Europe.

My saxophone playing has been described as "authentically fearsome ... just the sort of thing that fries microphones and never pays the rent." (Bill Meyer, The Wire, March 2018) I have fact-checked this and it is accurate.

I hold a degree in music composition from Brooklyn College, where I studied composition with Tania Leon, Jason Eckardt, Doug Geers and Doug Cohen. I also studied saxophone performance at BC with JD Parran.

I have written about music and politics for outlets including the Brooklyn Rail, Flagpole Magazine, Creative Loafing (ATL), and others."

"Michael David Watt (born December 20, 1957) is an American bassist, vocalist and songwriter.

He is best known for co-founding and playing bass guitar for the rock bands Minutemen, Dos, and Firehose. He is also the frontman for the supergroup Big Walnuts Yonder, a member of the art rock group Banyan and involved with several other musical projects. From 2003 until 2013, he was the bass guitarist for The Stooges.

Watt has been called "one of the greatest bassists on the planet." CMJ New Music called Watt a "seminal post-punk bass player." Readers of NME voted Mike Watt one of the "40 Greatest Bassists Of All Time" and LA Weekly awarded him the number six spot in "The 20 Best Bassists of All Time."

In November 2008, Watt received the Bass Player Magazine lifetime achievement award, presented by Flea."-Wikipedia

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"These sessions were dedicated exclusively to the music of the Minutemen, Doug Sahm and Henry Flynt. Having never played together before, all the songs were completed in one or two takes and the recordings reflect an urgency and immediacy that audiences have to come to expect from these musicians.

The three characters invoked on these recordings offer models for our current political and societal struggles. Creating a music that is both personal and political, artistic and activist, these three figures were/are soulful and practical examples of the artist-as-laborer, addressing a call for social justice and musical spontaneity.

Chadbourne and Sunwatchers have taken up this struggle, touring and recording, writing and collaborating, throughout their respective careers. Pushing this ethos out into the field and on this recording, 3 Characters is a reverential labor of love, where musical labor becomes a form of both love and resistance.

Mike Watt joins the conversation with spoken interpretations of lyrics, poetry, speeches and assorted agit-prop. Having Watt's contemporary voice alongside so many songs that he wrote and defined suggests this, and all artistic collaborations, function as part of a long continuum that inform future callings."-Amish
