Jacques, Anne-Francoise / Tim Olive: Bistre [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD] (Tsss Tapes)

The fourth release from the long-standing sonic research duo of Montreal sound artist Anne-F Jacques, who uses "rotating devices" based around small amplified motors, and Montreal ex-patriot living in Kobe, Japan Tim Olive (845 Audio), using magnetic pickups on objects and self-built instruments, here in six richly detailed and sometimes curiously menacing recordings.

Artist Biographies:
"Anne-Françoise Jacques is a sound artist based in Montreal, Canada. She is interested in amplification, erratic sound production devices and the construction of idiosyncratic contraptions and systems. Her particular focus is on low technology, trivial objects and unpolished sound. Active in performance since 2004, Jacques has performed at venues and festivals throughout North America and Europe, collaborating with Diktat, Martin Tétreault, Ignaz Schick, Éric Normand and Miguel A. Garcia, amongst many others. Jacques also has presented installations as half of the duo Minibloc and has composed soundtracks for animated films in an ongoing collaborative project with Julie Doucet. In addition to operating sound label and mail art project Crustacés Tapes, Jacques curates a bimonthly audio art show for the Berlin-based webstation Radio On."-845 Audio 11/3/2022

"The music of Tim Olive arises from collaboration with fellow musicians/sound artists, collaboration with physical and temporal setting, and collaboration with those involved in the act of listening. Using simple materials (magnetic pickups, steel strings, tuning forks, metal strips, hand-wound motor mechanisms, magnetic tape, dental floss and analog electronics), Olive's work examines presence and the present, the interplay of the human with material/time/space, and the uniqueness, intensity and unrepeatability that lives in each performing and/or recording situation.

He is interested in music as a social activity, as a way of creating community, a way of countering the forces which lead to an increasing atomization of contemporary life; music as a felt experience rather than as a concept or a theory.

A Canadian residing in Kobe, Japan, Olive has released music on Japanese, European and North American labels, with Jeff Allport, Cristian Alvear, Pascal Battus, Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Samuel Dunscombe, Nick Hoffman, Anne-F Jacques, Jin Sangtae, Jason Kahn, Takahiro Kawaguchi, Francisco Meirino, Katsura Mouri, Takuji Naka, Makoto Oshiro and Ben Owen.

Olive has performed/recorded in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe, with the recording collaborators listed above, as well as with Akiyama Tetuzi, Maria Chavez, Che Chen, Kelly Churko, crys cole, Joe Foster, Haco, Hong Chulki, Bonnie Jones, Richard Kamerman, Kostis Kilymis, Siew-Wai Kok, Madoka Kouno, Tomasz Krakowiak, Fangyi Liu, James Rushford, Carl Stone, Fritz Welch, Nate Wooley, Jared Xu and Yan Jun.

In addition to organizing events in Japan, Olive runs the label 845 Audio."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Sound artists Anne-F Jacques and Tim Olive have been recording together on and off for half a decade. Though both hail from Montréal, Olive has lived in Japan for some years, but makes it back to Canada frequently enough to revisit this ever-fascinating collaboration. For Bistre, their fourth release together, the pair sat down last year in their hometown to concoct six tracks of minimal, tense sonics. Jacques plays what she calls "rotating devices" (small electronic motors that are manipulated and amplified) while Olive uses magnetic pickups. This spartan set-up produces a wide range of sounds, all executed with healthy doses of restraint and distance. At times listeners might find themselves leaning in close to catch all the small whirrs, statics, and pin-prick sounds, but Bistre is perhaps best enjoyed more passively. Let all of Jacques and Olive's tiny aural events seep into your brain without trying too hard to process them, and they tend to stick there for a while."-Marc Masters, Bandcamp Weekly
