"Bob Bellerue is a sound artist, experimental musician, sound/video curator, and creative technician based in Ridgewood NY. Over the last 30+ years he has been involved in creating and presenting a wide range of sonic activities - experimental music, sound art, noise, junk metal percussion ensembles, soundtracks for dance/ theater/ video/ performance art, and sound / video installations. Bob's electronic sound work is focused on resonant feedback systems, using amplified instruments, objects, recordings, and spaces, in combination with electronics and software written in the Supercollider audio synthesis programming language.

His festival Ende Tymes was founded in 2011, and the 11th iteration is presently delayed due to the coronavirus.

"[..] Composer/bassist, Brandon A. Lopez, deemed "The Ubiquitous Free Improv Bass Ace" by the Village Voice and said to play with a "Bruising Physicality" by the Chicago reader.

He was born and raised in the splendors of Northwestern New Jersey, in the shadow of the (New York) city. It was there that he cultivated a taste for the left of center musics and subsequently, dug graves.

He's had the pleasures of working with many of the world's luminary weirdos. Here's a list: Nate Wooley, William Parker, Chris Corsano, Justice Yeldham, Weasel Walter, Peter Evans, Tyshawn Sorey, Gerald Cleaver, Ingrid Laubrock, Tom Rainey, Tony Malaby, Paul Lytton, Mette Rasmussen, Jooklo Duo, Michael Foster, Leila Bordreuil, Jaimie Branch, Joe Morris, Brandon Seabrook, Cactus Truck, John Dykeman, Daniel Carter, and many others.

"Luke has pursued a vast number of creative projects over the years. He plays bass and saxophone with DC-based indie rock band Laughing Man, who has performed at historic venues in the city including the Black Cat and St. Stephen's Church, opening for national acts such as The Evens, Wavves, Junkyard Band, and Wale. He has also played saxophone with his own experimental group Ziggurat, as well as various special collaborative performances throughout the East Coast.

As an electronic artist, he has been showcased in local exhibitions alongside legendary hip hop artist Grap Luva, and DC beatmaker Damu the Fudgemunk. He has also been a participant of Sonic Circuits' Festival of Experimental Music, performing on the same bill as cellist Okkyung Lee, as well as performing in other venues alongside instrument builder Layne Garrett and saxophonist Sam Hillmer (Diamond Terrifier). He is also a member of experimental electronic trio Mind Over Matter, Music Over Mind, which has participated in numerous festival performances, including Sonic Circuits' Festival and Noise Fest at George Mason University.

On the jazz side, Luke has performed at many of DC's historic venues including Bohemian Caverns, Twins Jazz, and HR-57. He had the honor of studying and performing with saxophonist Hamiett Bluiett. Recently he lead a 12-member ensemble in an hour-long tribute to John Coltrane on his birthday at the legendary Bohemian Caverns. He is also a member of Trio OOO, a collaborative ensemble featuring saxophonist Aaron Martin, and drummer Sam Lohman.

More recently he has helped establish CapitalBop.com, a DC-based jazz website and 501c3 non-profit organization, as its Avant Music Editor. Through the site, he has helped launch a live jazz performance series dubbed the "DC Jazz Loft", presenting some talented jazz artists in and around the DC area. He has also presented other jazz performances in his "Red Door Loft" series at the now-closed Goldleaf studios, as well as shows at CD Cellar in Arlington, VA, Bossa Bistro and Lounge, and DIY space the Paperhaus, where his performance curation was picked by Bob Boilen as one of the best shows of 2012.

He is also an Artist-In-Residence at the art space Union Arts and Manufacturing, in Washington, DC, where he regularly rehearses his numerous musical projects as well as hosts special performances and workshops.

During the day, he is the Production Coordinator for WPFW 89.3FM, as well as the host of THE VIBES edition of Overnight Jazz, weekly eclectic jazz program which showcases music from various sources in Luke's musical explorations. Through WPFW he has had the privilege of working with some seminal figures in music and social justice such as Chuck Brown, Yusef Lateef, Randy Weston, Muhal Richard Abrams, Juma Sultan, and Amiri Baraka. He has had the opportunity of producing many successful programs including a month-long commemoration of Black Music Month., featuring notably the reunion of trombonist Phil Ranelin and saxophonist Wendell Harrison from the Tribe organization of Detroit. He also co-produced a month-long tribute to pianist Horace Tapscott Los Angeles based community organization UGMAA (Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension). He also produced Washington, DC's first live radio appearance of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal on the program Jazz and Justice with Tom Porter."

"Jessica Pavone (composer, viola, violin, el.bass) has performed in countless improvisation, avant jazz, experimental, folk, soul, and chamber ensembles since moving to NYC in 2000. She currently plays with Normal Love, in a duo with guitarist Mary Halvorson, with Anthony Braxton's ensembles and as a solo violist. As a composer, The Wire magazine praised her "ability to transform a naked tonal gesture into something special," and The New York Times described her music as "distinct and beguiling...its core is steely, and its execution clear."

Pavone's recent works for solo viola and voice stem from years of concentrated long tone practice and an interest in repetition, song form, and sympathetic vibration. She combines her long tone rituals with delay, understated melodies and sparse lyrical content while continuously experimenting with new forms. She is interested in the physicality of performing her somewhat larger-than-comfortable instrument and believes that cultivating physical bodies as a strong container for her thoughts is part of the creative process.

As an instrumentalist, she has personally worked with and interpreted new music by; Aaron Seigel, Andrew Raffo Dewar, Elliott Sharp, Glenn Branca, Henry Threadgill, Leo Smith, Jason Ajemian, Jason Cady, Jeremiah Cymerman, John King, Matana Roberts, Matthew Welch, Tristan Perich, Tyondai Braxton and William Parker; and, has played strings in bands such as Christy and Emily, Pure Horsehair, White Blue Yellow and Clouds, Joy Mega, and The Artificials.

Pavone has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, performing in venues ranging from international music festivals, universities, and art galleries, to community centers and basements. Her music has premiered in venues in New York City such as, Roulette, Issue Project Room, and The Kitchen, and at the Klangbad Festival in Sheer, Germany. In 2011 she was featured in NPR's "The Mix: 100 Composers Under 40." She has received grants and commissions from the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, the American Music Center, New Music USA for her collaboration with choreographer, Anna Sperber, The Kitchen, MATA, The Jerome Foundation, The Tri-Centric Foundation, Experiments in Opera, and the chamber music collective, Till By Turning."

"Gabby Fluke-Mogul (b. 1991) is an improviser/composer living in New York.

They exist within the threads of improvisation, the jazz continuum, noise, & experimental music.

Their playing has been described as "embodied, visceral, & virtuosic."

"Ed Bear [b. 1983] is an American performing artist and engineer. His work with robotics, sound, video, transmission and collective improvisation investigates the questionable calibration of perception. As an educator and designer committed to an open source world, he researches and practices material reuse and as a civil responsibility.

He has toured extensively in North America and Europe as a performer and teacher, working with organizations such as The Mattress Factory, The Montreal Pop Festival, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute. In 2009 and 2010 he received NSF and other funds to study e-waste streams as educational resources, software defined radio and novel energy harvesting using ionic polymer metal composites. He is a 2012 LMCC SwingSpace artist-in-residence, 2010 free103point9 AIRtime fellow and received the 2008 Roulette Emerging Composer Commission. His music is available on Peira, Azul Discographica, Roar Tapes, and several other record labels.

Since receiving his B.S. In Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of NYU, Ed Bear has provided freelance design, manufacturing and engineering services to start-ups, acclaimed artists and musicians, film and theater productions, and leading education institutions. As a research specialist at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he investigated technology-neutral, commercially viable solutions to dimming and control of emerging solid state lighting systems for multiple markets with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Alliance for Solid-State Illumination Systems and Technologies industry partners. He is currently working with littleBits, Inc. to revolutionize modular electronics."

"Recorded on the hottest days in the longest year, "Radioactive Desire" is a work for free chamber music in feedback environments. Simple improvisational structures gave focus to the exquisite playing of the musicians, and the performers were physically located within speakers of varying sizes to create multidimensional feedback systems.

It is a project borne of feedback between speakers and instruments, but the context in which it came to fruition demonstrated the deep interconnections between people and systems of collaboration. The project was a way to activate musical signals with the push and pull of chthonic energy, yet we felt and lived that in the improvisation of our lives to a more visceral extent than we may have ever thought possible. Working with these sounds, processes, and ideas provided substance and process for me to work through these difficult times.

I am indebted with gratitude to the relaxed and precise skills of the musicians who took on this project, a group of deep shredders in the avant-garde improvised extended cosmic free music worlds. They were able to roll with the handwritten notes that provided the scant written music, and create new forms of music in real time."-Bob Bellerue



"Here we have more music by Bob Bellerue, following last week's collaboration with Christian Rønn. Bellerue is a percussion player playing Suling Gambuh (a Balinese flute), metal, percussion, electronics and feedback. Of the six pieces on this double CD, there are two solo pieces, and the other four in collaboration with others; one is with Jessica Pavone (organ), and the remaining three also include a larger ensemble of Brandon Lopez (double bass), Luke Stewart (double bass), Gabby Fluke-Mogul (violin), Ed Bear (baritone sax) and Bellerue in various roles in these pieces, with only his solo 'Metal Gambuh' playing them all. The recordings were made in July last year over two days at the First Unitarian Church of Brooklyn-Heights, with all these people playing together and with additional mixing later on, which included, "re-amping recordings (pumping sound into speakers on timpani, snare drums, and metal objects)". Here at Vital Weekly, we receive more and more improvised music, and it's not always easy to find a reviewer for such music, unless, of course, one is enthusiastic about it. That is the case with these discs here. Sure, this is improvised music, but it is also something else. The element of drone, for instance, is something not to be missed here, but also the factor of noise is of importance. The amplification of instruments, as well as the role of feedback, makes these pieces massive blasts. Overtones, generated acoustically, start a new life in this space and with this amplification. And so, yes, this is improvised music, but then of a variety, I dig a lot. The music is intense on every level, and there is a great underlying tension in these pieces, a mysterious force if you will. At times, I was reminded of Organum in his heaviest phase (not the recent electronic version) or Phill Niblock, but then in a more improvised manner., as it is not always about drones and standing waves, but also about shorter, broken sounds; perhaps such as the ones, we would expect from improvised music. Also, the Zeitkratzer Ensemble should be mentioned (and perhaps that also says something about my frame of reference here?); I hope you get my drift here. It is a long ride, over two hours of music, and maybe not something to be enjoyed in one long take. It is too massive for that, I think, but the power remains unbroken when served in smaller doses."-Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly
