  Shaking the Squid - June 3 2015

By philz 2015-06-03
: ()

Catching up after our Memorial Day Sale, as a number of significant releases passed through our doorway last week. May is always a busy month as labels and artist push to get their releases out before the summer months, and 2015 has some remarkable releases keeping us busy at work and incredibly pleased with great new music to listen to while we're at it.

Most notable, 3 LPs and 2 CDs from Lithuania's NoBusiness Label, and 10 (!) new CDs on Portugal's most prolific label, Clean Feed, plus one massive 3 CD/1 DVD set from Matchless UK, a new Victo release, and 6 new titles on UK's FMR Records.

Clean Feed and NoBusiness are extraordinary examples of the global nature of improvised music, releasing material from improvising artists in Europe, the UK, the US, and through Clean Feed's sublabels like Saamleng, also the far east. Both labels have excellent representation of legendary players like Peter Brotzmann, Barry Guy, Gerry Hemingway, Charles Gayle, Roy Campbell, Joelle Leandre, Evan Parker, Billy Bang, Kidd Jordan, Howard Riley, &c. and also of the new breed, like Nate Wooley, Adam Lane, Chris Lightcap, Sai Miguel, Rodrigo Amado, Eric Revis, Susana Silva, Lotte Anker... I should stop, because it's unfair to the wealth of players represented on these labels to single out any. The glue holding them all together is superb playing that references jazz tradition while opening the field to modern playing, creative applications of other genres, or strictly free playing from musicians grounded in traditional technique. The NoBusiness releases are still in our Just In section while we add more samples for the LPs, but they're here and ready to ship.

The Matchless set is simply beautiful, capturing 3 nights at Cafe Oto fro the trio of Evan Parker (tenor sax), John Edwards (double bass), and Eddie Prevost (drums), joined one night by Alexander v. Schlippenbach on piano, and another night by Christof Thewes on trombone. It almost feels like a summation of their work to date, with extraordinary playing complemented by a beautiful hardcover book format, which holds 80 pages of images and text, and sleeves for the discs. If you've been following any of these players this will be a jewel in your collection, an appropriate package for the perseverance and determination these musicians have put into their work. Kudos to Eddie Prevost and Matchless for releasing this set.

We also received, at last, the latest 4 HatOLOGY titles from the Swiss Hat Hut, which you'll see listed in our New Releases section.

Two of them are reissues: Steve Lacy's Shots was originally released on LP on the French Musica Records label in 1977, restoring the album from two copies of the LP, one from Hat founder Werner Uehlinger's copy, and one track from Emanem founder Martin Davidson's copy. The other reissue is the quartet of Brotzmann / McPhee / Kessler / Zerang, "Tales Out of Time", which was initially released on HatOLOGY in 2002 and has been out of print for quite some time.

The other two HatOLOGY releases are new albums, starting with saxophonist Ellery Eskelin performing solo at 61 Local in Brooklyn, NY performing on tenor sax. The four tracks are original compositions, and his playing is beautiful, very personal and distinctive, like listening to tales from a well seasoned traveler. The other new release is an electroacoustic composition from Herbert Distel, a Travelogue of field recordings organized into two long works that present hallucinatory sound with an illusive rhythmic component, structured into a long journey with a departure, journey and arrival.

The FMR releases explore duos, trios and solos, with Frode Gjerstad's Trio with Paal Nilssen-Love and Jon Rune Strom taking the trio lead, followed by the The Scrambling Ex trio of Peter Van Huffel (well documented on Clean Feed), Andreas Willers and Oliver Stiedle; and then the trio of Tom Jackson, Daniel Thompson, and Benedict Taylor in the unusual improvising configuration of clarinet, guitar and viola. The duos are led by the long-running collaboration of saxophonist Francois Carrier and drummer Michel Lambert; similarly saxophonist Paul Dunmall is found in a duo with drummer Tony Bianco. Finishing this set of releases is a solo album from Norwegian drummer Ola Djupvik, an inventive player presenting a dynamic set of ideas performed on a kit.

Last but hardly least, we also received the new Victo duo release of Fred Frith and Evan Parker performing live at the Victoriaville Festival. Two masters at work, their playing is unhurried but rich in detail and inventiveness, with great compatibility in conversation. The applause and calls at the end of the concert tell it all, and those of us who weren't at the concert are fortunate for this excellent document of the show.

In Stock

Outside of the releases mentioned in the opening, here are some other excellent releases that arrived over the last week, which we're still working on, and which can be found in our In Stock section.) As mentioned above, we've had a flood of material come in over the last few weeks, and our Just In section currently has 66 titles listed. We don't like rushing a release into our New Releases section, and if we take a little longer to get a release into our newsletters it's typically so that we have more time to gather information about the release, improve or collect audio samples, and to listen and know enough about the release to categorize it properly.

Squid Tech

Our move to a balanced server configuration moved forward this week, with all images in the store now being served from our Teuthida.com counterpart. This speeds up load times on our pages, and also allows the shopping cart to concentrate on functional aspects of the page instead of serving media. Coupled with the move to our new audio players we're finding our pages to be loading significantly faster.

For several weeks we've been experiencing intermittent problems with our search engine. The symptom was a very slow page load when searching, with a two line string of text showing up across the top of a page, but under the images, and could result from a customer using the search function, either on purpose (that is, trying to search for something) or as a result of embedded searches on the page (where the customer didn't realize they were using the search function. We had asked our server admins several times to help find the cause of the problem, and had made a number of changes in an attempt to stop the problem from happening, but with no success.

We're happy to report that we discovered the cause of the problem: our sitemap generator. A sitemap is a file or set of files that are generated based on the content of a website, and that are submitted to search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing to help them index a site. Our sitemap software had gone a bit crazy because of the wealth of cross-links we use, such as the aforementioned embedded searches. With a bit of tweaking we were able to limit the sitemap software, making it run much more quickly and without taking up the resources that were causing the error messages to be displayed on our pages.
